What Billing Cycles and Rate Types Are Supported?

Freelancer Dashboard supports the billing structures used by most independent workers.

Rate types #

  • Hourly — Bill by the number of hours worked. Multiply hours × rate on the invoice.
  • Fixed Rate — A flat fee for a project or deliverable, regardless of time spent.
  • Per Word — Common for writers and translators. Bill by word count × per-word rate.
  • Other — Enter a custom quantity and label (e.g., per page, per image, per post).

Rate type is set at the client level as a default, but can be overridden per assignment.

Billing cycles #

  • Last Day of Month — Invoices generate at the end of each calendar month.
  • First Day of Month — Invoices generate at the start of the month.
  • Weekly — Invoices generate every week.
  • Manual / Other — You control when invoices are created.

Billing cycle is set per client. If you have retainer clients, monthly is the most common choice.

Invoice terms #

  • Due on Receipt
  • Net 10, Net 15, Net 30
  • Other (custom number of days)

Terms are set per client in Clients → Edit Client.
